ART AFFAIRS gallery is celebrating the 400 year anniversary of the Amsterdam - New York relationship, with events both in Amsterdam and New York!
In the new space in Amsterdam, the season starts with a group show of New York artists from our programme, including: Louise Bourgeois (born French), now recognized as a century leader. She was greatly influenced by the flux of European surrealist artists who migrated to the United States after World War II.
John Coplans (born British), became a photographer at the age of 60, after a long and influential career as a writer, curator and founding editor of Artforum, a leading dialogue American art magazine.
Joel Fisher (born American), lives and works alternating in the U.S. and Europe. His work evolves from trivial starting points, that in his imagination become figures. These are first drawn and then cast in bronze, or any material that seems appropriate. By doing so, Fisher not only proves his skills, but leads us by his imagination and humoristic view on life.
Michael Gitlin (born South African), moved to New York City in 1970, where he received a MFA from Pratt Institute (1972). He showed at Schmela Gallery in Dusseldorf, Germany and his works are in important public collections, such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
Bernar Venet (born French) decided to move to New York in 1966, where he started to work at Arman's studio. Right from the beginning, he worked in a conceptual way, using tar, as well as gravity and chance, as compository means for sculpture and painting.
Not only these artists are related to New York, they all have a strong concept, reflecting life in their individual way : finding, making and transforming.
ART AFFAIRS gallery will also have two shows in a temporary space in New York:
