Expanding our focus from Color-field to Color-function, Conner Contemporary Art presents P[OP] -an exhibition exploring visual correspondences and thematic differences between the 1960s genres of Pop and Op art.

Inspired by the optical qualities of Color-field painting and the precepts of Gestalt psychology, Op artists identified the surface properties of color- and brightness-contrast as the content of their nonrepresentational works. Pop artists, on the other hand, embraced iconic images of popular culture, yet enlivened their recognizable forms with dynamic visual effects found in Op art. P[OP] playfully demonstrates contrasting ideas of pictorial content expressed in these stylistic modes while simultaneously emphasizing their optical similarities.
