Paul Boston, Opening, 2010, acrylic and mixed media on board, 63 x 63cm
It is impossible to encapsulate all the elements and complexities of Boston's work in a short, pithy paragraph as they are an accumulation of a lifetime of contemplation, experience and action.
This new body of work pushes the boundaries even further than the previous relief paintings that created an ambiguity between background and foreground. Spheres and hemispheres challenge our concept of the canvas. Circles appear to be the key to this exhibition, whether seen as a simple geometric form, or symbolically as moons, heads and even apples. The serene landscapes contained with these illusive motifs are the means by which Boston creates a mysterious and continuous horizon, another challenge to our perceptions.
These are works which must be experienced, for both the subtlety of their execution and the surprise of discovering that they are not what you expected.
