Richard Larter is one of Australia's most distinguished senior painters. Larter has produced an impressive body of work over a period of almost 50 years. Larter came to prominence in the 1960s with a number of pop inspired works. His colourful imagery from this period references contemporary politics and culture in a fresh and lively manner. These early works display Larter's excellent draughtsmanship as well as his eye for brilliant and provocative colour.
Over the ensuing years, Larter has explored both figurative and abstract painting. In his most recent show at Niagara, a series of nudes were displayed along-side glitter infused landscapes and hallucinogenic abstracts. These works leapt off the wall, like the excited efforts of a young painter. For a man entering his seventh decade, this is no small achievement.
A number of Larter's works, as well as being seductive objects, negotiate desire and pornography in often confronting fashion. These works, although hard, are important additions to a continuing dialogue on censorship and public forms of eroticism.
Larter is English born but moved to Australia with his wife Pat, in 1962. Until her death in 1996, Pat was an artist, film maker and active collaborator with Larter throughout his career, modelling for a great number of his paintings. In 1996 Larter was awarded the prestigious Joan and Peter Clemenger Art Award for long-term excellence. His work is included in all major public collections in Australia, as well as numerous private collections in Australia and overseas. He currently lives and works in Narrabundah, ACT.
