Kinetic Installations/Photography
Opening: Thursday, 24th June, 6 p.m.
Exhibition Dates: 24th June - 31st July
Commercial Illusions is Roland Fuhrmann's first solo show of kinetic installations in the Spielhaus Morrison Galerie. Fuhrmann was made known to a wider public in the exhibition "Berlin-Moskau" (2003/2004) in the Martin Gropius Bau, where he presented one of the most bewildering works, Fortification, a concentric spiral of barbed-wire which turns in on itself.
Roland Fuhrmann shows kinetic devices in Commercial Illusions which ironically reflect our manic fixation for economic growth and social development. In a meaningless process a kitschy circle of mini-conveyor-belts transports small-change endlessly round and round. In Traffic-jam Simulator model cars drive in a circle, small traffic-jams are created, and the journey continues hesistantly to the next traffic-jam. However the leitmotiv of the exhibition is the circular movement. There is no goal and no progress.
In another installation time seeps through an hour-glass, controlled by a laser which in the moment the last sand passes through automatically turns. This technical inversion of Sisypho´s hour-glass with its endless repetition of a finite process mirrors in itself the sign of the infinite.
In the end room the human stands in central focus. A conveyor-belt turns into a film with demonstrators beneath the slogans of the UN-human rights. Although the text keeps repeating itself the speed of the film allows only fragments of the text to be read. A prayerwheel as permanent photomechanical human rights mini demonstration, the exact text of which hardly anybody knows by heart and few respect. |
