"Canvas is the place" is the title of Rubén Guerrero's (Utrera, Seville, 1976) second solo show at the Gallery Luis Adelantado, where the questions related to images: their perception, construction, representation and interpretation continue to be fundamental elements in his work.
Guerrero clearly shows a progressive approximation towards a pictorial representation of a more referential and figurative character, thus making visible the origin and photographic process that gave rise to it.
Guerrero chooses the motives indistinctively of the iconographic media, comics, publicity, illustration, design, photography or television, to employ them in a pictorial method, characterized by a radical one bi-dimensionality. He fastens each surface of color confining the most minimum gesture, in appearance next to hard edge applying the paint with flat opacity endowing the work with a illusionary formal solidity.
With each work Guerrero explores the multiple readings of an image, obliging us to examine and reconnect the possible interrelations through associative exercises; visual dichotomies or alterations of the natural qualities of the objects represented, subverting its logical sense; and at the same time in a way more subtle and perverse it seems as if in each image he is trying to reveal for us the sophistry and the artifice that the painting hides.
Artist belonging to the new generation of Sevillian painters, after his incorporation in 2005 to the gallery Luis Adelantado his work has been presented in Shanghai, Rome, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Sao Paulo and Miami in group shows as well as in art fairs.
