Rui Gomes is an artist who makes the attempt to capture the feelings and emotions of a happy childhood which he can not let go of and tries to eternalize in his work.
He creates this impression through a technique of seemingly childish brush strokes and through applying intense color in large distinct surfaced areas. At the same time his work shows a great deal of small detail, whereas often letters and words are a part of the pictorial composition.
The paintings of Rui Gomes are fun and carefree and the phantasy figures he creates capture the attention of the observer. On the other hand, as such, his technique is actually well developed and deliberate.
The works of Rui Gomes are colorful, refreshing positive and aim to the emotional side. Because of the directness and spontaneity which his painting emanate a world of childish phantasy is created. Directly and honestly Rui Gomes expresses what affects himself innermost in an artistic way.
The newest painting series of Rui Gomes, which is mostly part of this exhibition, takes up the theme of the life and thoughts of children who grow up in poverty and are not well protected or taken care of.
In turn he uses his typical technique and pictorial composition through which this series has a strikingly tragic and at the same time comic appearance, which creates a sense of uneasiness.
Rui Gomes tells the story of children, their struggle for life and emotional behavior in poverty, hunger or war, being abused and exploited. They somehow succeed through detachment and find a place where they still find a life in dignity. The hope remains that we adults "will arrive on time" and will make the attempt to change the environment for the well-being of children in this type of environment. Finally all stories show characters that have finally overcome their difficulties and hardship.
