Scott Valenzuela – Metamorphosis –
New Pastels and Drawings
Valenzuela’s studio is an unusual environment for an artist, loud and somewhat odd it is located outdoors in front of a huge parking lot. At his table, on which a vast collection of crayons and pastels is spread out—Valenzuela performs the working artist. Day in, day out, at the table, occasionally surrounded, bothered, Questioned and inspired by curious coffee house customers, who enjoy the chance to get a sneak peek – Valenzuela has developed a new body of work: ‘Metamorphosis’
Reading Ovid and Kafka and digesting the circumstances and the challenges of his young life are mounting into a marvelous source for image creating. Valenzuela takes us in his new exhibition on a personal walk to join his alter ego, meet his desires, fears and friends. Despite some formal elements, which appear influenced or inspired by Pablo Picasso and the Italian surrealist Giorgio de Chirico, Valenzuela succeeds in developing his own distinctive narrative visual language, reflecting intellectual potential, artistic imagination and last, but not least technical skills. Avoiding the widely beloved imagery of sunsets, whales, dolphins, mermaids and other commonly highly appreciated super heroes and subjects, his work is not targeted to those, who easily like to mix up decoration with art, but rather see artwork as a source to challenge their mind and/or as a thought provoking inspiration.
“... to find an escape and an explanation, I withdraw into my mind, to pull out the sparse pieces of an unconscious world, that I create and explore every chance I get. My art is a visual novel with reoccurring people and things...when you look at my art, you are looking at pieces of my life... I incorporate it all into my world of open plots of dirt and walls, closed in stair cases, a heroic fool, night skies and light bulbs.”
