While Alexander Ochs has been showing works by Franz Gertsch and Fang Lijun as of last week, the gallery in Berlin is now going to exhibit Shi Jing, an artist completely unknown in Europe.
The artist was born in 1971 in the South-Eastern Chinese minority province and studied in Beijing; over the last year, he has developed into one of the most recognized and observed newcomers in the young Chinese painter scene. In 2004, his works had been shown for the first time during the ART COLOGNE while as of June 2005, he will be included into the exhibition ´Mahjong´(Collection Uli Sigg) at the Kunsthalle Bern. In addition, ALEXANDER OCHS GALLERIES BERLIN | BEIJING already showed two of Shi Jing´s works along with paintings by Immendorff, Lüpertz and Penck, among others.
The artist is creating seemingly monochrome paintings which – depending on the point of view – move into the figurative. The observers of the contemporary Chinese art scene will notice that with Shi Jing, a generation of young artists is launching a proper reception of the modernity, here of the doyen Qiu Shihua . On the ocassion of the 2nd Berlin Biennale (2001), Qiu also impressed his audience with his large, white paintings. |
