May 17, the Review Room of Vartai Gallery will introduce the young video artist Simona Žemaitytė and her latest work: a video installation All About Beauty (2012), a series of pictures documenting the installation and an example of her previous works, a documentary Portraits. Simona Žemaitytė enjoys both local and international acclaim. She is interested not in stories, but in idea-based plots consistent in content, form and aesthetics. Simona calls her main medium “dynamic reality”. She employs the principles of a documentary and aims to maintain the mood which ranges from objectivity to subjectivity. The artist has a Bachelor’s degree in journalism; a Master’s degree in photography and media arts from Vilnius Academy of Arts; as well as a Master’s degree in visual arts and communication design from Istanbul. She currently resides and works in London. The video installation All About Beauty featured in the review speaks about the importance of beauty in the context of a funeral ritual. The story revolves around the embalming of a body – an expensive aesthetic procedure practiced in many countries around the world. All About Beauty has a connection with Simona’s previous work, a documentary titled Exit (2010), which has earned the artist a prize in the 15th Tallinn Graphics Triennial. The video All About Beauty and the pictures documenting the installation clearly show Simona’s talent for the aesthetic and the laconic. The above mentioned works will be accompanied by a silent documentary Portraits witnessing the different and sometimes painful experiences, memories and marks of time of disabled and elderly people residing in the nursing home of Barun Yurt (Istanbul).
