ART AFFAIRS has moved to the renovated premises of wittenburgergracht, where 4 spaces provide ample possibilities to show different work at the same time we have decided to spend more time on project oriented shows in the future and concentrate on the exchange of ideas and artworks on both sides of the atlantic ocean.
STEVE DE GROODT , showing for the second time at ART AFFAIRS, will Start the new season. he has been an artist in residence for the last two months, in order to prepare for this show. what started as an adventurous exchange between a los angeies and an amsterdam gallery in 1998, has grown into a deep interest in the way this american artist - with the dutch name - thinks and creates. not only did we gain access to his worid, his works also became a source of Inspiration to us.
unlike the seifconcious, the concrete visual Statement about the "logic" in this worid, DEGROODT presents us with the fragile, the incidental and failure. he has been and still is inspired by samuel beckettīs writing, as well as by a visit to papua new guinea, where he encountered the cultural meaning of seemingly unimportant objects, such as sticks, seeds or feathers, combined with modern western objects and materials. he realised the power that certain materials gain, when juxtaposed with one another, and that the "history" of a particular material, such as clothing, or an envelop is essentially changed, to become a new reality, a new identity.
STEVE DEGROODT, being a visual artist as well as a musician, carefully combines, calling his works "sculptural meditations": objects and volatility harmonizing. a contemporary interpretation of arte povera?
DEGROODTīS work is finding increasing demand, as can be seen from his recent exhibitions, a.o at the san francisco museum of modern art and at well known galleries like richard hellerīs of santa monica and l.a. louver at venice, California, so, we are proud to be able to show and represent this artist in the netherlands.
