Opening: Saturday, 04. November 2006, 3 pm to 8 pm
Until 25th January 2007
Svätopluk Mikyta has become well known in recent years for his idiosyncratic workings of original pages from old books produced in the traditional gravure printing process. As a general rule, Mikytas starting point is an anonymous master print or a photo gravure onto which he makes at times a discrete, almost unnoticeable mark, or at other times a fast paced intervention in order to create a geometric, compositional or content related reconfiguration. His drawings are beautiful and conceptual, as if made for a bisexual audience. First impressions draw you to the finesse of the drawings and their exceptional craftsmanship. On looking again, his idea becomes convincing, providing a wealth of possibilities for interpretation.
In his new series – „Ritter“ (translation: Knight or Cavalier) – which were produced during his 2006 scholarship in Bern, his master print is no longer photographic but entirely graphic. There was a hint of this in his previous works „Varianten I-X“, in which the photographic master print was only embedded in his drawing. Mikyta makes use of the flyleaf of books in his new series which are entirely without figuration and made up of just font and layout. His geometric intervention in red and black allow new figurative shapes to emerge, influenced by fragments of text.
Mikyta’s repertore is not limited to these drawings alone. As in his first solo exhibition, we will also be showing new ceramic works. In ‚Dirty Memories’ he deals with the subject of his country’s history and builds a picture of the present times in which he speaks of ‚The Aesthetics of Memory’.
