"First thought, best thought," counselled the poet Allen Ginsberg. But if the first thought is immediate certainty and purity of heart, and the second thought is the fall into self-consciousness, ambivalence, equivocation, and duplicity, then what is the third thought? A descent into utter confusion? The rescue of thesis and antithesis by their dialectical synthesis? Or something else altogether? The exhibition Third Thoughts considers works that use writing and language in ways that go beyond the univocal and the ambiguous to broach this third state of thought. Among the artists included will be Mel Bochner, Luca Buvoli, Tony Cragg, Tsibi Geva, Monique Prieto, Kirstine Roepstorff, Suzanne McClelland, Jack Pierson, Allen Ruppersberg, and Nedko Solakov.
