VOLTA NY
MARCH 7-10, 2013

VOLTA NY, taking place from Thursday, March 7 through Sunday, March 10, is thrilled to announce its NEW LOCATION for 2013: 82MERCER in SoHo, New York.

The Mercer Street building's 50,000 square foot exhibition space, comprising two floors and daylight loft-like spaces, is nestled in a groovy corner of SoHo and will provide a handsome platform for VOLTA NY's strictly solo-project format, including a broad international roster as well as plenty of local representation.

82MERCER resides in the heart of New York's dynamic art-scene heritage and among some of its most forward-thinking spaces. SoHo features significant historic locations, including Artists Space, founded in 1972 as one of New York's earliest alternative venues; Swiss Institute, the venerable independent, not-for-profit organization with an innovative international forum for art and dialogue; and the nearby DIA spaces, housing Walter de Maria's Broken Kilometer and The New York Earth Room. In addition, The Drawing Center, the lauded fine arts non-profit devoted solely to drawings, is relocating to a spacious unit designed by Claire Weisz and WXY Architecture + Urban Design, steps from its original Wooster Street location. Plus, The Judd Foundation's classic presence at 101 Spring Street is currently under restoration, with an intended public opening in early 2013.

Simultaneously, SoHo has experienced a renaissance, including the SANAA-designed New Museum for Contemporary Art anchoring Bowery Street; with gallery heavyweight Sperone Westwater returning downtown to a new Norman Foster + Partners-designed tower after eight years in the Meatpacking District; and The Hole, the eclectic space run by former Deitch Projects director Kathy Grayson, opening nearby. Other SoHo hotspots include José Freire's Team Gallery, which complemented its Grand Street presence with a second location on Wooster in 2011; The Suzanne Geiss Company, establishing its own electrifying downtown legacy in the former Deitch headquarters; and Artists Space's brand-new bookstore and performance venue Books & Talks. Only walking distance from The Bowery and the LES's younger galleries, a trip to VOLTA NY means being near the latest and greatest of the cutting-edge.

A total of five subway lines provide easy access to VOLTA NY: six blocks east from Spring Street Station (C/E Trains), three blocks west from Spring Street Station (6 Train), or two blocks south and one block west form Prince Street Station (N/R Trains). Plus, a regular shuttle bus service will run to and from The Armory Show and VOLTA NY, from Thursday, March 7, through Sunday, March 10, during fair hours.

With this move to 82MERCER, to a neighborhood bearing the legacy of archetypal 1970's artists' workshop 112 Greene Street and progressive institutions like The New Museum, VOLTA NY reemphasizes its mission to promote challenging, emerging international talent and relevant contemporary positions, regardless of the artist or gallery's age. We are very happy to situate VOLTA NY within art-historic and progressive SoHo, and we would love to welcome you back on March 7, 2013.
