The Precipice Sessions I
In association with Liverpool Street Gallery, Sydney
Stephen Harvey makes large abstract paintings. His first show at Niagara presented a series of works evoking the sea. They were slick and seductive with a blue-green palette. Since then, his work has shifted and changed. His most recent paintings are quite introspective, referring more to an internal landscape. The application of paint, too, has undergone some radical changes. Instead of using a wide brush, he has used his hands to build and shape the painting, direct contact between the artist and the work. Harvey's sensitivity to colour remains a feature. His exhibition in 2005 has paintings with pale blues and soft pinks with contrasting black and white. There is a tough yet fragile beauty to be found in these new works.
Harvey has a Masters of Art (Painting) and was an artist-in-residence at the Arthur Boyd Bundanon trust in 1997.
Steven Harvey The Precipice Sessions I fully illustrated colour catalogue available.
