YANG MAOYUAN - THE ARCHETYPE, THE HORSE AND THE QI

Unlike other artists of his age, Yang Maoyuan places the interest in traditional chinese philosophy and ideology in the focus of his art and he is deeply engaged in the spiritual and mental options they implicate. In different series of works this exhibition gives insight in the eclectic manifestations these philosophic and spiritual reflexions engendered.

Yang's series of "Inflated animals" - horses, goats and sheep, inflated to monstrous size and sometimes in lucid colours - is concentrating on the past and family tradition. The artist's ancestors lived as nomads in Mongolia with all those animals. The work shows Yang's personal interest in his cultural roots and the identity of his family.

Other works in his first european solo show concentrate on the confrontation of men with his own existence, nature and transience.
