In February 2006 Yang Shaobin visited the exhibition by Arnulf Rainer, an artist whose work he highly appreciates, at St. Matthäus, the Berlin 'art church' at Kulturforum. Seeing Rainer's works exhibited in the church space awoke a desire in him to present his own works there. The director of the Kulturstiftung der Evangelischen Landeskirche Christhard-Georg Neubert was thrilled by the artist's idea. After many conversations, some of them quite personal, the artist, Alexander Ochs and the church decided on a theme, a cycle on 'The Ten Commandments'. A few days before the planned opening on October 19th, Yang Shaobin made his paintings available, but they could not be shown in a church as a sacred place. This is a statement. Was it really impossible to show them? This remains an open question. Alexander Ochs now presents this series at his gallery. In addition, the show presents new works of the artist on the situation of miners in China, as well as documentation, film, manuscripts, and newspaper articles about the controversy.
