Introduction by Alexander Ochs, PRÜSS & OCHS GALLERY BERLIN I BEIJING
With her works Yoo. Junghyun is focusing the relationship between individual identity and society's collective power. Her recent paintings "breath" are questioning the inner dimensions of identity. Through her work, she attempts to create a visual atmosphere of fear and disequilibria.
Yoo. Junghyun was born in 1973, and lives in both Seoul and Berlin. The artist takes a position in-between the cultures. This transnational theme plays a central role in her work in numerous ways. The artist reflects on her role as a woman, her own sexuality, as well as relationships and non-relationship in her own family in her work. Her recise painting, which use a highly viscous paint, makes the intimate public, but without allowing a voyeuristic gaze of the beholder. In her installations, Yoo. Jung Hyun engages interpersonal structures and their impossibility.
The artist studied in a number of places, including Munich, Germany, where she received the Stipendium des Bayerischen Staatsministeriums as well as the Dannerpreis. PRÜSS & OCHS GALLERY BERLIN | BEIJING will be showing the artist's first solo exhibition in Germany SHADOW OF DAYS from March 11 to April 17, 2004. This year the artist has participated in ARCO's section UP & COMING 'Asian Party - Global Game, Part III' which is a program of emerging art curated by Hou Hanru and Mami Kataoka.
