After studying at the Korean College of Fine Arts in Seoul and Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich, Yoo Junghyun, born in 1973, has worked and lived as an artist 'in between the cultures'.

With the exhibition Dark Flowers, Alexander Ochs presents the second individual exhibition of this artist's work to be held at the Berlin gallery. For this exhibition, Yoo Junghyun created twenty paintings, in which she pursues pathways among traditional Chinese ink painting, Western modernism, and the techniques of Italian frescoes, in so doing showing her virtuosity.

The artist superimposed layers of paint that could almost be called transparent, a skin of paint on a skin of paint, thus achieving a complex form of condensation on the pictorial surface, only allowing for a mere suggestion of the original motif.

Beside the 'confusions' of plants in various shades of black, she realizes dark, colorful figures, often isolated; even in depictions of couples the individuals are turned away from one another. Faces and peripheral limbs are primarily dark, black, deformed, as if corroded by acid.

Currently, this 2001 winner of the Munich Danner Prize is artist in residence at Seoul's National Artist Studio.
