  ART COLOGNE 2012

April 18-22
Preview/Vernissage: April 17

Beijing based artist, He Xiangyu (*1986) has developed a new and diverse material and formal language; however one that remains anchored in Chinese tradition. Time and the transformation of material are central themes of his work, along with basic human experiences and the experience of communality, which can by all means be political.

For Man on the Chairs, the artist collected pieces of wood from an old canal and shipped them to Beijing where these were assembled into hundreds of chairs. The chairs were first exhibited in form of a performance at WHITE SPACE BEIJING, and can now be seen as a special project during the ART COLOGNE, thanks to the support of ART COLOGNE, the CHINA JAHR ('China Year) in Cologne, and in cooperation with our partner gallery WHITE SPACE BEIJING. The artist will be present at both the opening and the preview.

Photographs and a video work by Zang Kexin (*1978) will be exhibited within the framework of the grant programme NEW POSITIONS. Her photography and video works are based on research that takes on a scientific aspect as she follows people in China with her camera and captures their private surroundings.

Zang's artistic methods resemble testing arrangements, as she performs operations of complex thought and arithmetic steps, in which coincidences play a crucial role.

The artist will be present at both the opening and the preview.

Further artists presented at ART COLOGNE are: Gregor Gaida, Nandan Ghiya, Anna Kott, Shay Kun, Lu Song, Heribert C. Ottersbach, Luzia Simons, Chiharu Shiota, Radek Szlaga, Miriam Vlaming, Wang Shugang, Yang Shaobin, and Yin Xiuzhen.

HERIBERT C. OTTERSBACH | GALLERY WEEKEND BERLIN

On the occasion of the GALLERY WEEKEND BERLIN, we will open an exhibition with works by Heribert C. Ottersbach (*1960) on 27th April. His paintings are constructions made from fragments of the visual, which always precede a deconstruction and almost inevitably create a transformed perspective of the visible. This can cause not only new perceptions of reality, but also new concepts of it, which ultimately constitutes the social value of art and the importance of painting.

Opening: Friday, April 27th, 7pm - 9pm Uhr
Exhibition: April 28th - May 25th, 2012

WANG SHUGANG in Berlin

Currently in the Berlin branch of our gallery, works by Wang Shugang (*1960) are on exhibit. These works bring the conceptual approach of the artist to the center of attention. With his smaller scale bronze cast figures of seemingly uniform serial portraits, Wang joins many Chinese artists of his generation concerned with the central theme surrounding the individual and society. Wang often plays with ironic and sexualized references and uses these to serve as an indicator for the social structure and social paradigm shift in his country.

CHEN GUANGWU | ART HK 12

At this year's ART HK 12 (17th - 20th May in Hong Kong), we will present the Chinese concept artist, Chen Guangwu (*1967) within the framework of the curated show, ASIA ONE.
