JOHN YOUNG | BONHOEFFER IN HARLEM April 13th. - August 2th. 2009 Opening: Ostersonntag, 12. April 2009, 16.30 Uhr Venue St. Matthäus-Kirche im Kulturforum Matthäikirchplatz 10785 Berlin Dietrich Bonhoeffer was ordained a Lutheran reverend at St. Matthäus Church, Berlin in 1931. In 1930 he travelled to New York for the first time, where through Abyssinian Baptist Church he got acquainted with 'Black Music' and the movement against racism. For his active resistance against the Nazis he was imprisoned and executed on April 9th 1945 in the concentration camp Flossenbürg. The Abyssinian Baptist Church was built in 1808 and is therefore one of the oldest afro-american churches in the USA. During its bicentennial celebration numerous representatives of public life like Jesse Jackson, Barack Obama as well as Bill and Hillary Clinton paid homage to the church. John Young, a Chinese artist born in Hongkong in 1952, lives nowadays in Melbourne. Based on the colours of the stained glass windows of the Abyssinian Baptist Church he developed an abstract painting. Further, Dolma Lob Sang, a Tibetan living in exile in Nepal, translated John Young' s abstract painting to the medium of tapestry, which conforming with the traditional Chinese weaving is made from silk. This work is the central piece of the exhibition 'John Young | Bonhoeffer in Harlem' and is shown in the St. Matthäus-Church (Kulturforum Potsdamer Platz) as 'altarpiece'. Based on the tapestry as central work John Young created eleven 'tableaux' about life and death of Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Kevin Rudd, Prime Minister of Australia, dedicated a 'message' to the exhibition.
