ART.FAIR (closed, 2016)

Art Fair
Cologne Becomes Germany’s Art Capital
ART.FAIR’s ten-year anniversary is just around the corner

COLOGNE, Germany, October 29, 2012—It won’t be long now:

For four days, Cologne will be transformed into the art capital of Germany. From November 1-4, the ART.FAIR | Fair for Modern and Contemporary Art and BLOOOM – the converging art show. will be simultaneously opening their gates alongside one another at the Staatenhaus. North Rhine-Westphalia’s Secretary of Commerce, Garrelt Duin, will be officially opening the fairs during the grand vernissage the evening before.

Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter and Roy Lichtenstein
Once more, the ART.FAIR will be exhibiting a who is who of modern, contemporary and current art, including works by artists such as the Pop Art icon Andy Warhol and Keith Haring, whose work is currently experiencing a renaissance of interest. Positions by Georg Baselitz, Jeff Koons, Roy Lichtenstein, and Gerhard Richter will also be presented.

Richter caused a sensation when one of his abstract works changed hands for the unbelievable sum of 26.4 million euro. This apparently makes it one of the most expensive works by a living artist ever to have been sold at auction.

Visitors will also come across an impressive sight as they wander through the south wing of the Staatenhaus.
At its far end, the Majorcan artist Francesca Marti’s gigantic installation “Planet of Fusions” spectacularly
towers into the air, measuring over six meters in height. The work is a symbiosis assembled from over 150 satellite dishes that serve as backgrounds for projections. Sixteen Epson high-performance projectors bring the expansive work to life.

Stefan Strumbel, Shepard Fairey, and Mordillo
However, it is not only the visitors to the ART.FAIR who will be coming across big names. Every year, the BLOOOM also achieves greater and greater resonance: As the world’s first interdisciplinary fair for convergent art, it will be showing work by artists including Stefan Strumbel and Shepard Fairey. With his iconic HOPE poster featuring Barack Obama, the latter drew attention during the 2008 presidential election in the United States and is now considered one of the most influential and best-known street artists in the world.

Thus, the BLOOOM does not hesitate when it comes to the frontiers of art, but deliberately includes them. And
this concept has proven a success. Now, even some of the most important figures working in non-traditional artistic media are placing their bets on the BLOOOM. The world-famous cartoonist Guillermo Mordillo is using this year’s fair as a platform to offer his works for sale—for the first time ever.

Furthermore, the BLOOOM has a conceptual innovation in store for its third year: For the first time, the BLOOOM Mall will offer a space for art-related, but more commercial projects.

The BLOOOM Award continues to grow
One of the fair’s declared goals is the advancement of young artists. Thus, the announcement of the winner of the international art competition BLOOOM Award by WARSTEINER provides a further highlight. Over 800 creatives from 29 countries around the globe submitted their work this year. On the day of the vernissage, the jury will announce this year’s three winners from among the ten finalists. Patrice Bouedibela, who became famous as a VJ on MTV Germany, will be hosting the awards ceremony.

The finalists’ works will also be presented in a special exhibition at the BLOOOM.

A fashion show and parties for the anniversary
A program of events appropriate to a ten-year anniversary awaits the public. On the day of the vernissage, three hot Berlin labels—Nico Sutor, Tata Christiane, and Blaenk—will be sending models wearing their creations down the Staatenhaus catwalk. The show, entitled ICON.IC(AL), is being realized in cooperation with KALTBLUT magazine.
It is also a part of the CITROËN Vernissage Party. Here, something special awaits our visitors: Together with the artist collective Lichtfaktor, a fascinating performance centered around the new CITROËN DS5 will take place.

On Friday, November 2, the giant ART.FAIR 10th B-day Party will be held just a short walk further north along the Rhine. No one less than Extrawelt and David Ananda will be pumping up the crowd at the Bootshaus with their live-sets.
