Lectures and workshops
28, 29 and 30 June 2013

From June 28 till June 30, pioneering feminist artists Suzy Lake and Lisa Steele will each give a lecture and a workshop. Both artists participate in the second part of "CONTINENTAL DRIFT. Conceptual Art in Canada: The 1960s and 70s". Their work is presented in a newly added chapter, which focuses on the relationship between conceptual art and body politics seen against the backdrop of feminist and queer strategies.

Friday, 28 June, 7pm
Artist talk
Suzy Lake
"Performing for the Camera in the 1960s and 70s: So Whose Gaze is it Now?"

In her artist talk, Suzy Lake will discuss her work in the context of the American and Quebec socio-political influences on her studio production in Montreal. The late 1960s were marked by student riots and civil rights activism in Europe and North America. However, the visual arts at this time were dominated by minimalist aesthetics of formalism. This context of social unrest and 'art about art' aesthetics prompted a younger generation of artists to bridge the gap between what was happening in the studios with what was happening in the streets. If artists were acting on what and who they weren't, by the early 70s identity issues attempted to address the consequence of political involvement with questions of who they had become.

The talk will be in English.
Admission free!

Saturday, 29 June, 3-6pm
Workshop
Suzy Lake
"Extending the Photograph's Subject / Subjectivity by Extending its Materiality"

In her workshop, Suzy Lake will discuss examples of her work wherein she has used staging, idiosyncratic techniques, multi-media or different formats to extend performative and expressive elements. Following the visual introduction, Lake will demonstrate two techniques to achieve a malleable photographic image. Workshop participants will quilt or form a three-dimensional object from these photographic emulsions.

Supplies for workshop:
Participants should bring a generous supply of resin coated black and white or colour gelatin prints (no digital ink prints). Accessories and supplies such as sewing needles, thread, paint brushes, and acrylic polymer will be provided by the Kunstverein.

The workshop will be in English.
Admission free!

"I Will (Still) Make Boring Art (Redux)"

Lisa Steele will provide a context for the development of her own practice of performance-based video art from the early 1970s. Making reference to conceptual art from this same era, the talk will pose a series of questions about the role of authenticity, expertise and craft in her own art practice.

The talk will be in English.

Sunday, 30 June, 3.30-6.30 pm

Lisa Steele
"Performance with and for the Apparatus or Who Left This Door Open? The Moving Image in Feminist Art from the 1970s"

In her workshop, Lisa Steele will discuss how feminism inflicted the work of women artists in the mid to late 1970s. Examples are drawn from video and film from the era including works by Kate Craig, Valie Export, Linda Montano, Martha Rosler, Carolee Schneeman and others.
