PRESS RELEASE PUBLICATION: Stephen Willats ART SOCIETY FEEDBACK Ed. by Anja Casser and Philipp Ziegler Published by Verlag für moderne Kunst Nürnberg 27 x 20 cm, soft-cover 557 pages, German/English 277 images, 44 colour images 58,- Euro ISBN 978-3-86984-124-3 Graphic design: Biotop 3000, Stuttgart Book Launch Friday, 22 October 2010, 8 pm Badischer Kunstverein, Karlsruhe ART SOCIETY FEEDBACK is the first comprehensive monographic publication on the work of the British artist Stephen Willats (*1942). From the 1960s until today, Stephen Willats has developed a pioneering practice based on collaboration, interactivity and participation. His works, which are structured like charts and are frequently based on workshops in social focal points with a large number of participants, are intended to encourage viewers to engage with their own creative and cognitive processes, and thereby to examine and transform the way they perceive reality. In addition to the five essays written by internationally renowned curators and theoreticians such as Ute Meta Bauer, Brigitte Franzen, Tom Holert, Emily Pethick and Andrew Wilson, ART SOCIETY FEEDBACK brings together for the first time the most important writings by Stephen Willats which have arisen over five decades as an integral part of his artistic oeuvre. All the writings, some of which have never been published up to now or have been long unavailable and therefore accessible only with difficulty, have been revised for this publication and arranged chronologically in accordance with the most important working phases of the artist. In this constellation, the texts not only document the theoretical background of Willats' work, but also offer clear methodological support for understanding his manner of working, which is based on participation and interaction. The texts are accompanied by a representative selection of reproductions of works from the 1960s until today. Supported by the Stiftung Kunstfonds with funds from the VG Bild-Kunst and by The Henry Moore Foundation.
