Rodney Graham: Two Generators
Canada 1984, 35mm, 4 mins
Duration of screening: ca. 60 mins

"Two Generators" is Rodney Graham's first film work. Shot at night, in black and white, the film shows a section of a small river near Vancouver, illuminated with industrial lights powered by two diesel generators. As the sound of the roaring generators fights with that of the rushing river, the viewer sees the lit portion of the waterway, and distant mountains. The length of the film - four and a half minutes - was determined by the duration of a standard roll of 35mm film stock.

Graham settled on a format for presenting this work that mirrored the formal conventions of the traditional film house: A projectionist would dim the 'theatre' lights, open theatre-style curtains, and project the brief film until it ran out and light from the projector filled the screen. The curtains would then be closed, the 'house lights' brought back up, the film rewound, and the procedure repeated.
In its current version, the curtains have been eliminated, creating a formal allusion to the disappearance of this convention in today's multiplex theatres.
Graham's "Two Generators" is a condensation, an homage, and a rumination on the basic devices that created modern cinema.
