ANDRÉ GOMES SHORTLISTED FOR THE 5th BES PHOTO AWARD
BES photo Award
Opening: March 23, 2009, at 10 pm
Exhibition open to the public from March 23 - May 17, 2009
Berardo Museum Collection, Lisbon, Portugal
Baginski, Galeria / Projectos is very pleased to announce that André Gomes has been shortlisted for the BES photo Award. On March 23, the artist will show his most recent works especially created for the award's exhibition at the Berardo Museum in Lisbon, Portugal.
André Gomes (1951) has been selected by a jury, with Miguel von Hafe Perez, Delfim Sardo and Nuno Crespo, which also selected the artists Edgar Martins and Luís Palma.
In the opinion of this jury, André Gomes' nomination resulted from "the consistency of a long professional development in which the quality of his narrative, the relation with literature and theatricality as well as the rare sense of relation with transcendence give a most extraordinary originality to his whole oeuvre."
In terms of exhibitions, the jury mentioned the Macha show, as it had been presented at the Visual Art Center in Coimbra, as a particularly important moment in the context of photography in Portugal as well as for the artist's own development.
The BES photo is an initiative of the Bank Espirito Santo (Portugal) in partnership with the Berardo Museum Collection that promotes Portuguese artists or artists with residence in Portugal whose work has been developed within the technique of photography within a certain period of time.
On April 9, 2009, an international jury made up by Agnès Sire, director of the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson and independent curator; Helena Almeida, artist and winner of the 1st edition of BES photo; and Paul Wombell, independent curator will decide the winner of BES photo 2008.
