... to the workshop
Teens 04 . Berlin Gone Mad

from 26 to 30 April 2011

at the Postfuhramt
Oranienburger Straße 35-36

for young people between the ages of 14 and 17

Multicolored robots march up to the Brandenburg Gate and push it aside, whistling cats whiz down the KuDamm on roller skates, and a hungry King Kong nibbles on the TV Tower as if it’s a pretzel—Berlin is often a crazy place, but is it ever this outrageous? Yes—at least in our imaginations. But how do you bring such wacky ideas to life? With animated film, everything you can imagine becomes possible: you can shape your very own world just the way you want it. The participants in this Teens Workshop will have the chance to do just that. They will remake the city and create both its residents and its tourists out of paper and clay. Moving their figures around the city by hand, step by step, they’ll create moving pictures—and moving stories—in and about Berlin.

Under the guidance of animation artists Gary Rosborough and Jan Caspers, the workshop participants will learn everything they’ll need to know to make their first animated film. After learning the basics of stop motion animation, they’ll experiment with two-dimensional cutouts and three-dimensional clay figures, backgrounds, music, and sound. They’ll come up with their own stories and assume the director’s role, taking charge of everything from creating the storyboard to sound and camera techniques to the animation itself. They’ll do the post-production and editing and produce the opening and closing credits. And then, of course, they’ll hold the premiere.

Gary Rosborough has been teaching animation professionally for over fifteen years. He has inspired countless children, teenagers, and adults on four continents with his introduction to the wonderful world of animation. Jan Caspers has been teaching workshops at schools for fifteen years as well, and came to animated film by way of puppetry, paper cutouts, and robot theater.
