Ray Malone - Solo presentation at PREVIEW BERLIN art fair
"perhaps there is no better time for the reduced, for the minimal, almost for the miniscule - for the discrete, the nearly silent, the barely discernible, for the lightest of gestures, the most modest of marks - for an art dedicated to the possibility of intimacy, away from the noise and the clutter - even in the very midst of it"
These words of Ray Malone's open the chapter "remarks" in his latest catalogue published on the occasion of his solo exhibition at the Berlin Mies van der Rohe Haus in 2012. And they are indeed remarkable, especially in the context of an art fair as part of the Berlin art week. Looking at Malone's reductive and minimal paintings and drawings, it becomes obvious that they are concerned with issues such as the rules of proportion, the definition of two-dimensional space, as well as engaging with musical forms and concepts, such as rhythm, composition, choreography, and that, in addressing fundamental questions of art itself, they are not in the least insignificant, but are particularly valid in contemporary art today - the more so, when the results are of such distinctive subtlety and an engagingly convincing aesthetic.
In 2008, dr. julius | ap presented its programme of New Concrete + Architecture for the first time at an art fair: the 5. Berliner Kunstsalon. Five years on and eight art fairs later - in Cologne, Amsterdam and Basel - the gallery returns to its home city with Ray Malone's solo presentation at PREVIEW BERLIN.
In the interim, the venue in Schoeneberg's Rote Insel has established a distinctive profile for showing non-objective art and dealing with architectonic and space-related issues, has gained, in the relevant circles, an international reputation, and continues to work on the gallery's particular interests - beyond all the trendy fashions and art market hysteria, or, in Malone's words: "away from the noise and the clutter - even in the very midst of it".
In displaying the solo presentation of Ray Malone's work at PREVIEW BERLIN art fair, dr. julius | ap is pleased to represent its position within the contemporary art landscape.
