Book presentation: June, 11th, 2010 at 5 p.m. During this year's Berlin Biennial Barbara Thumm Gallery will initiate a book presentation on June, 11th, 2010 at 5 p.m. at the Gallery on Markgrafenstraße 68 and a talk with the artist Jo Baer and Dutch independent curator and editor of the book Roel Arkesteijn. Broadsides & Belles Lettres Jo Baer: Selected Writings and Interviews Edited by Roel Arkesteijn, published by Roma Publishers, Amsterdam Approximately 30 texts, published and unpublished, written between 1966 and the present: letters, essays, interviews, articles, facsimiles of illustrated texts, transcripts of talks as well as completed sections of a book-in-progress. The items are of disparate length and tone and cover subjects ranging from optics to orchids, cultural politics to ancient Greek iconography, art theory and philosophy to the mixed pleasures of living in a drafty castle in the Irish countryside. To all these diverse topics Baer brings formidable powers of analysis, rigorous logic, a penchant for provocation, lively wit and an inimitable, exacting use of language - the same ingredients that go into her art. Her unique role in the development of Minimalism and her carefully reasoned withdrawal from that movement are evoked and spelled out, respectively, bringing vividly back to life one of the most highly charged periods in post-War art. This will undoubtedly be the main attraction for many readers. Others will be charmed by the breadth of her interests and experience, the incisiveness and originality of her views and the elegance of her prose. None will fail to be impressed by her integrity and daring. Text: Sarah McFadden The book presentation takes place in the context of the new exhibition of Jo Baer that can be seen at Barbara Thumm Gallery till June, 26th, 2010. | |||
