At 12 noon, on Saturday, 15/09/2007, we will open our exhibition Norbert Schwontkowski Dolores.

Schwontkowski (*1949) is among the most influential German painters of our time. Over recent years, especially, his work has received widespread international aclaim through art critics as well as the art market and it is to be found in important international collections, be they private or public.

The images of Norbert Schwontkowski appear untouched by all this. Just as in his early days as an artist, they turn towards the magic of a wisdom growing wild on the roadside rather than turning the wheel of vanity. The pictures, relying on gentle earthy and red tones, speak of the poetry of everyday life. To achieve this, the artist does not require pictorial spaces crammed with detail, but with minimal means he tells stories about strange encounters and meetings in worlds evoking the charm of the surreal …Title and image are inextricably linked. Irony is the inspector providing the pictures with an erratic lightness. No tragedy without comedy, no success without failure. Or is it the other way round? Schwontkowski's work, like an inner pulse, addresses the vital opposites in life. (from: Karin Pernegger, on the exhibition Wir in dieser Drecksbrühe at Stadtgalerie Schwaz 10/05/07 to 23/06/07)

Norbert Schwontkowski, born in Bremen in 1949, lives and works in Bremen, teaches at the Hamburg Academy of Applied Arts; recent solo exhibitions: 2007 gallery side 2, Tokyo, Kabinett für aktuelle Kunst Bremerhaven, Raucci/Santamaria Naples, Stadtgalerie Schwaz, 2006 Contemporary Fine Arts Berlin, 2005 Contemporary Fine Arts Berlin, Brandenburgische Kunstsammlung Cottbus, Kunsthalle Erfurt, 2004 Kunsthalle Bremen, Galerie Metis Amsterdam, Zonca & Zonca Gallery Milan, 2003 Produzentengalerie Hamburg, Muka Gallery Auckland
