Michael Kienzer
Michael Kienzer
At the opening of our exhibition by Michael Kienzer (until 29 March) on Saturday, 9 February 2008, 12 noon, Stefan Bidner, director of Kunstraum Innsbruck, will have a conversation with the artist.

Kienzer's presence in exhibitions and projects has become increasingly frequent and his recognition in the international art world has grown accordingly. In Palma de Mallorca he created a nearly spherical sculpture out of aluminium wire and last October he made a very large aluminium wire sculpture called Parasites for the sculpture project at the Tuileries, commissioned by FIAC Paris. Particularly striking works, that can or could be seen in Innsbruck, include Regenraum (Rain Room) and Fragile (the cloister of the Volkskunstmuseum clad in adhesive tape) for the exhibition 'The Invisible Touch' at Kunstraum Innsbruck in 2000, his Steg (Footbridge) into the lake made of doormats for 'Unter freiem Himmel', Skulptur im Schlosspark Ambras 2001/02, or Knäuel (Bundle) and Lichtwand (Wall of Light) at the customer centre of Innsbrucker Kommunalbetriebe AG (2001).

Kienzer's world is a world of things and their order as well as their semantic examination. His gaze is pragmatic and it investigates false bottoms and identifies back doors, whether he uses them or not. If the intervention succeeds the context is shifted, an interaction of meanings coming about, if the architectural or institutional frame becomes a false bottom a new system emerges at the moment we observe. Peter Pakesch, January 2008

Michael Kienzer, born in Steyr (Austria) in 1962, lives and works in Vienna and Graz. Contributions to international exhibitions and solo shows as well as numerous projects in the public space since 1984, e.g.: Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Stift Admont (2007), MAK Museum für Angewandte Kunst, Vienna (2005), Oberösterreichische Landesgalerie, Linz (2003), Rupertinum Salzburg (2000), Kunsthalle Bludenz (1999), Kulturhaus Graz (1995), Kunsthaus Mürzzuschlag (1994, 2000), Museum Moderne Kunst, Vienna (1991), Neue Galerie am Landesmuseum Joanneum, Graz (1988).

The exhibitions by Michael Kienzer at the Bernard Jordan Gallery, Paris, and Erwin Bohatsch at the Vidal-Saint Phalle Gallery, Paris, will be opened on Saturday, 15 Mar, three to five pm (until the end of April). From 22 Feb to 1 Jun, the exhibition Günther Förg Back and Forth can be seen at the Large Hall of the Essl Museum in Klosterneuburg. The presentation of our book Bruno Gironcoli Die Skulpturen 1956-2007, ed. Bettina M. Busse, Hatje-Cantz Verlag, on 28 Feb, at the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum in Innsbruck, will be accompanied by a presentation of models and prototypes. We will also unveil the premium edition and the luxury edition of the book including screenprint resp. sculpture. You will receive a special notification on this matter. Under the title The Alliance (curated by Seungduk Kim and Franck Gautherot, Consortium Dijon) the Hyundai Galleries in Beijing (5 Apr to 4 May 2008) and Seoul (4 Jun to 31 Jul 2008) will, among others, present a group of works by Bruno Gironcoli and Otto Zitko. The solo exhibition by Florin Kompatscher can still be seen at Galerie Eva Bracke, Berlin, until 1 Mar. We will present Kompatscher from 5 Apr to 24 May 2008. On Thursday, 21 Feb, 6 pm, the Tyrolean State Museum Ferdinandeum in Innsbruck opens its exhibition Walter Pichler. Es ist doch der Kopf (until 11 May), which made quite an impression at CFA Berlin a short while ago. For the Museum of Contemporary Art in Leipzig Otto Zitko has decorated the library rooms with a series of sweeping wall paintings. This exhibition (curated by Barbara Steiner, until 29 Feb) is the kick-off to a series of events dealing, from an artistic point of view, with the subject of libraries, and taking the form of presentations, projections, and an exhibition, among others with Clegg & Guttmann.
