|Thorsten Brinkmann to receive the Finkenwerder Art Prize 2011|
On 27 June 2011, the artist Thorsten Brinkmann will receive the Finkenwerder Art Prize 2011. Born in 1971 in Herne, the Hamburg-based artist will be awarded the prize worth 20,000 euros at a ceremony hosted by the company Airbus Operations in Hamburg-Finkenwerder.
Thorsten Brinkmann is being honoured for the highly distinctive body of work he has produced over recent years that oscillates between the genres of photography, sculpture, performance and installation art. Besides his staged photographic self-portraits, Brinkmann’s work also incorporates objects compounded from diverse objets trouvés. The result is sculpturally arranged readymades and photographic still lifes whose compositions reveal numerous art-historical allusions. Thorsten Brinkmann’s most recent work from the last few years and up to the present will be shown in a solo exhibition from 5th July until 21st August 2011 (opening on 4th July at 7 p.m.) in the Kunsthaus Hamburg. As part of the 5th Triennale der Photographie Hamburg, a further solo exhibition of his work titled “Ernie & se King” will open this Friday, 1st April 2011, at the Griffelkunst-Vereinigung Hamburg. Work by the artist can also be seen in the group exhibition “Glückliche Krieger” (“Happy Warriors”) currently showing in artfinder Galerie | Mathias Güntner, lasting until 7th May.
This will be the sixth time the Finkenwerder Art Prize has been awarded since its launch in 2000. Previous award holders are Almut Heise, George Rickey, Neo Rauch, Candida Höfer and Daniel Richter. The prize money and funds for holding the event have been donated by the company Airbus Operations GmbH in Hamburg and the Hamburg building society Baugenossenschaft Finkenwärder-Hoffnung e.G.
Initiator of the award is the non-profit organization Kulturkreis Finkenwerder e.V., to which an additional limited budget of 30,000 euros has been made available by the above-mentioned companies to hold the competition and mount the exhibition accompanying the prize.
Members of the independent jury which selected the prize-winner from a shortlist of thirteen artists were: Sabrina van der Ley, Almut Heise, Christian Meier, Nikolaus Schües and Tim Sommer. A jury charged with selecting a winner for the biannual award is nominated on each occasion by a board of trustees. Chairman of the board of trustees for the Finkenwerder Art Prize is the former First Lord Mayor of Hamburg, Dr. Henning Voscherau.
