Under the title China, Ángel Marcos (Medina del Campo, Valladolid, 1955) rounds off a trilogy he began six years earlier in New York and continued in Havana in 2004. Though the locations are entirely different, the images revolve around the same conceptual parameter: the conversation between the city's population and the powers that govern it through advertising and propaganda. Exploring both the city centres and the suburbs of Beijing, Hong Kong, and Shanghai, the artist captures the contrast between past and present, tradition and modernity through publicity, contrasting architectures and the clash of metropolitan landscapes. The result is a broad-reaching project that includes photography and video; a window onto Angel Marcos' personal take on today's China.
Mimmo Rotella's works show his extraordinary creativity and openness to any new experience. As he was first confronted with the top rank of Pop Art at the Venice Biennale in 1964, he had nothing to fear for simultaneous presence which, to the contrary, only accented to his intuitive originality and good timing directed, as it was, toward that sphere of advertising - as the mirror of a society and time-, publicity and mass communications which the Pop artists had chosen as one of their preferred arenas for projecting their work into the consumer reality. The way of composition of Advertising communicates through posters, from the use of lettering to the kind of page layout, from the iconographic stereotypes to the choice of colors.
"J'ai pensé au film de Erich von Stroheim, mais je m'en suis vite écarté. La série de ces "Folies de femmes" est une variante des rêveuses-tueuses que j'ai toujours incluses dans mes tableaux de catastrophes citadines. Ici la situation est plus concrètement ciblée mais c'est en fait mon propre portrait qui circule dans ces images du monde aux inépuisables variantes".

In his large-format oil paintings, Jacques Monory tells enigmatic visual tales. Seeing them involves many surprises. The viewers of Jacques Monory's works are confronted with a mirror held out by the artist. His narratives appear as quotes and fragments taken from the world of consumption. Advertising seduces us and creates an artificial value system propagated by society.
The work originates in the artist John Gerrard being struck by what he perceived to be the peculiar devotional quality of the oil derrick, stooping repetitively to the earth as though in prayer. The title of the work relates to the wide variety of ways in which the work can be understood to be animated, both literally, in that this is a sculptural tableaux brought to life by the artist but also by the works relations to power in the form of oil and by extension to spheres of politics, economics, society.
I called my biggest project, "Russkie." I want to bring together people of various nationalities and various religious confessions who, over time, landed in the Russian state from all kinds of other countries to live together in conditions shaped by history. History has already subjected these people to so many trials and experiments that constant anxiety has become their life and fate. That is why I immediately decided for myself: even in my arbitrary visual world, I will leave them be as they are. I do not wish, nor do I have the right, to meddle with their reality and trouble them once more. At the conceptual level, they became my conception.
