MAMA is a project of Public Art Squad foundation. It is a publicly funded visual arts and culture organization based in Rotterdam. Programming exhibitions not only in it's own project space on Rotterdam's "culture street" Witte de Withstraat, but far beyond their own premises.
MAMA (Media & Moving Art) started in 1997 as an exhibition space for young artists. In the years that followed, MAMA grew into a discussion-prompting and influential platform presenting a characteristic kaleidoscopic vision of contemporary visual culture for a broad audience. MAMA has developed specific expertise in the area of youth culture and contemporary visual cultures. Subsequently, MAMA has been approached by artists, individuals, (art) institutions and museums for advice and participation in a broad range of projects.
MAMA runs a full program of educational and cultural events, undertakes research projects and develops new ways of working with a range of audiences and communities through visual arts and culture.
In addition to the program of exhibitions taking place in their own project-space, Showroom MAMA, the organisation collaborates with a range of other cultural providers, both at home in the Netherlands and abroad to develop high-quality visual arts projects.
As a founding member of the Stability Mobility Network, MAMA is active in working with other artist-led organisations in a European context. This has involved projects aimed at the sharing of good practice and more pragmatic "hands on" work such as arranging exchanges of artists and exhibitions trans-nationally.
MAMA is made possible through funding from the Mondriaan Foundation, the VSB fund, The City of Rotterdam and a range of grant-making bodies. Sponsorships, also enable MAMA to undertake their work. Collaborators include Art Rotterdam, Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam Festivals, the Centre for Fine Arts and the Dutch Architecture Institute.
