MODEM Centre for Modern and Contemporary Arts
One of the largest and most up-to-date modern and contemporary art centres of the country and its greater region opened its gates in the autumn of 2006. MODEM possesses the geopolitical position, size and architectural capabilities to be the centre for modern and contemporary art life in Hungary.
MODEM is located in the historical city centre, in the recently formed Baltazár Dezso" Square. The three-storey gallery spreads on 4650 square metres from which more than 3000 square metres serve as exhibition areas. The country's biggest open space exhibition hall lies on 1300 square metres on the second floor where special installations are built for each exhibition. The centre organises mainly modern and contemporary fine arts exhibitions, but besides, other artistic events such as dance, music and theatre performances are also being held and it hosts museum-education workshops, lectures and conferences.
The centre handles The Antal-Lusztig Collection. Péter Antal, the owner has deposited a significant part of the works to the city of Debrecen for ten years and MODEM was entrusted by the City Council to handle the material. The collection contains more than 3500 artworks.
