P420 at Frieze Masters (17-20 October)
P420 is participating in Frieze Masters London with a solo show by Irma Blank (Celle, Germany, 1934).

The production of Irma Blank fits into the minimal-conceptual neo-avant-gardes of the late 1960s, proposing a radical and very personal solution to the issue of pursuit of an inexpressive and de-subjectivized art. In this historical-artistic perspective, the ego and the existence of the artist still enter the perimeter of the work, but through an attitude that is as impersonal as possible. The artist records the time of living through signs and images that are repeated and executed mechanically.

Starting in 1968, Irma Blank has inscribed signs on paper, recording an act of manual tracing. Her work is the expression of a work-time: it is the time spent with the artwork, a portion of life inscribed inside its perimeter.

All the work of this artist is crossed by a profound dialectic between writing and drawing; it thrives on constant tension between possibility of saying and necessity of existing, time of life and time of work. Her practice alludes to the exercise and space of writing, but detaches it from any claim to meaning; it is a sort of writing prior to its encoding in language, an utterly self-referential sign. It makes no sense, but if anything it is pure "sense," pure sensation transmitted from the hand to the surface, from the body to the work, like the tracing of a seismograph. Irma Blank said: I purify writing, I release writing from the need to have a meaning.

The exhibition will feature the Eigenschriften (Self-writings, 1968-1972), where the signs inscribed on paper record a manual tracing full of variations and flaws, high-strung slender lines that bear an incomprehensible language, and the Trascrizioni (Transcriptions, 1973-1979), where the artist reduces writing to an outline with an indexical reference; in the texts transcribed she keeps only the typographical layout, in a transformation of literature into visual art.
