Singapore - Contrasts Gallery will exhibit works from eight prominent Gallery artists for the 1st edition of Art Stage Singapore, Isidro Blasco, Lan Zhenghui, Li Tianbing, Shao Fan, Simon Casson, Wang Dongling, Wang Tiande, and Zhang Huan.

Contrasts Gallery nurtures and promotes a cross cultural and cross discipline stable of artists, both Chinese and international whose work is a recreation and extension of traditions. They react to and against western influences and the established western cannon to create a new aesthetic or visual language.

In anticipation of his forthcoming exhibition at the Hong Kong Arts Centre in March we are proud to present works from eChildhood Fantasyf Li Tianbing´s most recent body of work. In this series eFantasiesfand eMemoriesf are recurrent themes, growing up under the one child policy, these paintings reflect not only on his actual childhood experiences, but also his fantasies of childhood, imagined memories of camaraderie with the brothers and playmates he never had. Painting these fictional playmates is a means of the artist understanding and healing his past. Green Battle on the Field (2010) an example of these fantasies whilst Dream Studio (2010) illustrates the artists struggle to reconcile the past and present.

Shao Fan reflects on contemporary and traditional gLiteratih thought, and creates a new language, re-evaluating Chinese philosophy and principles. His continued obsession with Daoism and Ming furniture inspired him to create works like the Steel Ming Style Turd (2009) and Ming Stool Stainless (2007).
Taking inspiration from the ancestors painting style, executed in a traditional Chinese technique from Song Dynasty called gGong Bih, Shao´s paintings are unusual and cryptic. A hare is not merely a hare, a deer not merely a deer. Shao Fan shows the spirit that exists in every living creature man and nature are one.

Based on his collection of old photographs and official propaganda publications, Zhang Huan´s Ash paintings are moving meditations on themes of social history, spiritual aspiration and daily life.
Composed of incense ash collected from Buddhist temples, this unique and poetic media is an embodiment of the collective spirit and aspirations of the people of China. In addition to the ash series, including North (2008) and the sculpture Ash Thinker No. 5 (2007), the gallery will show Fruit Forest (2007) from the Memory Door Series.

Contemporary ink brush artists Wang Tiande, Wang Dongling and Lan Zhenghui reference 5,000 years of culture and use a time-honored media striving to break boundaries and reinvent traditions to create a new visual language for the twenty first century.

A Sense of displacement and fragmentation are present in the work of Isidro Blasco and Simon Casson.
Spanish artist Blasco merges architecture with art in order to create photographic sculpture whilst in British born Casson´s paintings the viewer experiences a kind of collapse of time, with ancient and modern, the figurative and the non-objective all coexisting together.
