Dear (sm.)ART-Friends, San Francisco-based photography artist Chris McCaw would like to invite you to visit his show CHRIS McCAW NEW PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE SUNBURN SERIES EXTENDED THROUGH DECEMBER 6, 2008 @ MICHAEL MAZZEO GALLERY, New York 526 W. 26 St. Suite 209 between 10th and 11th Aves. Gallery hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 11AM - 6PM and by appointment. Phone: 212 741 6599 After several shows of his new Sunburn series during this year (one in LA, two in SF & others), Chris is now showing in New York - and we at sm.ART are delighted how well his work is being received. The New York Magazine, which only lists a handful of shows, has been listing Chris' exhibition at Michael Mazzeo Gallery for weeks now … and this week, the list reads ...Richard Avedon, Luigi Ghirri, Chris McCaw, Abelardo Morrell, Cindy Sherman. In his Sunburn series, Chris turns the subject of his work, the sun, into an active participant in the printmaking process, creating fascinating prints that are literally burned by the path of the sun. The body of work was the result of a happy accident. Intending to create an all night exposure of the stars while camping, Chris failed to wake up before sunrise. He discovered that while the night's exposure had been destroyed, an interesting phenomenon had occurred on the film base, which had a hole burnt through it from the intense rays of the rising sun. "Not only is the resulting image a representation of the subject photographed, but part of the subject (the sun) is an active participant in the printmaking. .. My favorite part is watching smoke come out of the camera during the exposure. Thank you for looking."
