A native of Northern California, Patsy Krebs' formative years as an artist were spent in New York. She later lived in Los Angeles where she earned an MFA degree in 1976 and began an exhibiting career. She currently divides her time between Northern California and Southern Colorado. Patsy has taught extensively at art institutions throughout California. A recipient of the 1995 Pollack-Krasner Award, Patsy Krebs' work is included in several important collections including the Achenbach Foundation of the Fine Arts Museums, San Francisco; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and the Norton Museum in West Palm Beach, Florida. Patsy Krebs' work is strongly influenced by the minimalist aesthetic of Robert Irwin, wherein the focus of a painting is shifted from the object itself to an awareness of the way our perceptions change while we observe the work. For Patsy Krebs, colour is a fragile experience that rests ethereally upon the surface. Although she uses many layers of paint to build up those surfaces, they seem almost imperceptibly thin. While reflecting the light, these zillions of finest layers create an endless deepness, a wide, open, peaceful, unlimited space, in which Patsy's works are allowing the viewer's mind to float into. Patsy Krebs is guiding the viewer onto a subtle passage from one state of mind to another and is taking him/her onto a journey to serenity and silence deriving from wordless regions of the inner nature of things. Krebs' works are filled with a sensuo us and meditative inwardness. One may find himself overwhelmed with a highly charged emotional response as this journey may deeply touch one's soul by evoking a spiritual bonding between man and some universal natural order.

"The artist positions herself within a tradition that poses an alternative to external inundation. Both at first glance and in the end her works remind us of what it is to have a direct, unmediated experience."

Nancy Doll, Director
Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum
