After a brief career in Marketing Analysis and a position as research assistant at the Economic Faculty of her university, Sieglinde moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in Spring 1998. Immediately, she started pursuing studio art classes and she received the Certificate in Art Studio from UC Berkeley Extension in 2002. After graduating, her main focus shifted from painting to video with sound and video/multi-media installations. In addition, she also developed a body of work consisting of prints (digital and photo-polymer) derived from her videos and installations. Sieglinde Van Damme currently lives and works in San Jose, California. "My work is about ambiguities and virtual dislocation or dislocation of the mind. It focuses on the 'gray zones' in public and private notions of fundamental truths." Sieglinde Van Damme, 2008 The works shown at the UC Berkeley Extension Alumni Art show in San Francisco is a new print series, for which Sieglinde has come to embrace a new medium, photo-polymer intaglio, allowing her to produce her own video stills (versus digitally produced prints). The image still originates in digital format, but after developing a plate the actual printing resembles traditional etching techniques. Sieglinde's persistence in art was recently rewarded by an invitation to participate in the "Contemporary Art Biennale" in Florence, Italy, in December of 2009 Her photo-polymer prints are currently used as Sieglinde's fundraiser for the Biennale: For financial support, the donor receives a print in return as a way to say "thank you" - starting from a minimum of 100 €uros. At the Florence Biennale Sieglinde intends to present her recently created new video titled "new Parlor". It deals with the ambiguity of language; the use and abuse of words and how their interpretation lies in the hands of the audience. A small sample from this video has just been uploaded to Sieglinde's website at www.studiosieg.com/Pop-up. Sieglinde has also created a page on her website with more information about her participation at the Biennale of Florence.
