Terry Duffy's MONUMENTS is a Pan European site specific project which responds to iconic locations. The central focus of the project is humanity and its diversity and the coexistence of different cultures. The project was launched in Liverpool in September 2008, during the Liverpool Biennial and Liverpool as European City of Capital of Culture.

MONUMENTS is a powerful fusion of monumental architecture, fine art, history and humanity. It questions, challenges and informs architectural and spacial democracy, contemporary aesthetics and cultural legacy. Through the appropriation of the building the MONUMENTS installation injects new life into this palatial space and draws attention to the significance of its history.

MONUMENTS is the symbiosis of the outer building, the interior, the enclosure and the paintings. The 10ft high artworks appear to float on the walls of the massive enclosure designed and placed in stark juxtaposition to the opulent interior. This ambitious work by Duffy is full of pathos. There is no denying the latent spirituality within the space. The work is strangely ethereal and yet it has an undoubted physical, embodied presence.

The MONUMENTS paintings have been many years in the making. Duffy has ripped, etched, scraped, scratched and brushed these images into existence, flooding them with deep, translucent blues and although the work is abstract, they have powerful figurative overtones, the shape of some feel like a twisted torso's. Duffy has a long-term fascination with humankind's legacy and chooses for his work the context of iconic buildings that through their significant human history and iconography question and challenge perceptions of the past, present and future.

Architecture and monuments signify history and legacy on both a local and international level and it is these aspects through broader relationships culturally, emotionally and psychologically that resonate with the project. MONUMENTS will provide the opportunity for reflection, personal and community dialogue, to consider the past within the context of the present and the future and how societies want people to remember its past.

"MONUMENTS is an artwork that explores reality, history and emotion, that speaks to people without words, impacting on the eye, the mind and the senses. I want to create an artwork that can be consciously experienced like the natural emotion that comes from looking at the horizon. An artwork that encourages the mind and senses to realise that the subject is humanity and the outcome is a process of healing and positive progress."
