Biography
22.10.1925 Born in Port Arthur, TX (US) Robert Rauschenberg began studying Pharmacy at the University of Texas before joining the United States Navy, in which he served as a neuro-psychiatric assistant at the San Diego navy base. In 1947 he enrolled at the Kansas City Art Institute.
Attracted by photography, which became a fundamental activity in all his work, in 1948 he started studying at Black Mountain College, then directed by Josef Albers. In his first solo exhibition, however, at Betty Parsons Gallery in New York, he first presented his Black Paintings and White Paintings, which provided a foretaste of the diversity of his output in the fifties. In 1952 and 1953 he travelled in Europe and North Africa with Cy Twombly, the artist who was awarded the IVAM's Julio González Prize in 2002. During his travels Rauschenberg worked on the series of small collages and small boxes containing found objects, which were first exhibited in Rome and Florence.
In 1953-54 he began to produce his famous "combines", paintings and free-standing pieces that combined painterly solutions, objects of everyday use and technological components – elements of sound, light sources – which underwent constant aesthetic changes and which were the result of the fusion of the series Elemental Sculptures (made of wood, string and stone), Elemental Paintings (paper, gold and garbage) and Red Paintings. These works provided a synthesis of the gestural brushwork of the Abstract Expressionists and objects and images from everyday life. Their fusion of painting and sculpture represented a breakaway from the traditional distinctions between the two media.
His first presentation in Europe was at Galerie Ileana Sonnabend in 1963, a year before he won First Prize at the Biennale di Venezia. Since then his work has been shown in numerous retrospectives, the most recent of which was organized by the Guggenheim Museum in 1998.
As an artist with strong commitments, in 1970 he founded Change Inc., intended to aid the artists in greatest need, and in 1984 he created the ROCI (Rauschenberg Overseas Cultural Interchange) project, with the aim of promoting world peace through art.
During the course of his artistic career Rauschenberg has not ceased to create utterly novel and surprising works, introducing a whole wealth of materials and developing a special basic group of private images and icons which have produced a highly personal visual language.
His work can be found in leading public collections throughout the world: The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, Museum of Modern Art in New York, National Gallery of Art in Washington, National Gallery of Australia in Sidney, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, Kunstmuseum Basel, Tate Gallery in London, Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid and Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (IVAM).
Awards 1998 Awarded the Praemium Imperiale prize for painting.
2004 The fifth edition of the Julio González International Prize has been won this year by the American artist Robert Rauschenberg in recognition of the work he has carried out in the plastic arts and his contribution to modern art.
