Creating what he calls "photographic delusions," Muniz cites disparate influences: optical illusions, photorealist paintings, sight gags, abstract art, and real-life absurdities. Mostly he examines what happens as we continually reproduce works of art - how, through ubiquitous dissemination, they lose their uniqueness, and how we, as viewers, lose experience of the original object. In the last decade, Muniz has recreated iconic works based on modern and contemporary art, using such unconventional materials as soil, sugar, tomato sauce, chocolate, dust, and thread. His finished photographs exist as studies of, or new takes on, absent originals. Muniz has stated that his work "attempts to make the viewer examine the role of representation as an exchange and interaction of forms rather than an improvement on a specific one."
