Biography
1.1.1921 Born in Marseille, Bouches-du-Rhône (FR) French 'Nouveau Realisme' sculptor who died in 1998. His work is highly varied, but he became best known for his ingenious use of scrap material. In the mid 1950s he began to make sculptures from material that he found in refuse dumps - scrap iron, springs, tin cans, cars and so on - building these up with wire into strange winged or insect-like creatures.
César became a star in the 1960s having devoted many years to sculpture and living in poverty in Paris. Born in Marseilles, to an Italian father and a French mother who was mad about art, César left school at 14 to start his artistic career. Scrap yards offered cheap materials for sculpture, and from this point his signature style developed to make him a vital part of the Parisian artistic and social scene.
César created giant thumbs Thumb (1965) Tate Modern in London) and involved himself in intensive researches regarding metal works, resin, paper and cardboard which he transformed into what he called "expansions". Much influenced by Picasso, César also produced monumental sculptures like his Venice Biennial piece of a 520-tonne metalwork monument.
He designed the French cinema award statuette 'César' and by the end of the 1980's, César became more and more prolific. He worked above all as a designer (designing posters for strip club Crazy Horse Saloon in Paris) and directing a team which was producing works to which he was only adding his signature. However little actual of César's hand there is in his later works, his legacy will continue to live on as his sculptures litter squares all around Paris.
