Biography
1900 Born in Rotterdam, ZH (NL)
Willem Hussen attended the Academie voor Beeldende kunsten in Rotterdam in 1917, but left in 1918 to study under the painter and graphic artist Dirk Nijland (1881-1951). He lived in France with some interruptions before the Second World War where he met Picasso and Mondriaan. From 1940 onwards he published a variety of collections of poetry and articles on art. In addition to his work as a painter and poet he also produced aluminium sculptures.
Together with Willy Boers, Hussem was one of the most convinced Dutch devotees of abstract art after 1945. Both had started their education and career before the Second World War and the oeuvre of both artists is characterized by autonomy and maturity. Hussem concentrated on abstract painting from 1941 and drew inspiration from primitive cultures and calligraphy and received many prizes for his abstract work. He was a member of the artists’ associations «Pulchri Studio» and «Vrij Beelden». The judgement of this «ayatollah» of modern art, handed down from his habitual table in «De Posthoorn» -a well-known watering hole in The Hague- was heard and feared by the entire modern art landscape in his years.
