The longing for a new, paradisiacal state of primeval force, freedom and community was one of the strongest impulses of early twentieth century German Expressionism. The artists wanted unadulterated life – free of the hustle and bustle of a superficial life in the modern metropolis. Artists such as Emil Nolde and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner found their paradise in the German provinces and in the primitive cultures of distant parts; others, such as August Macke and Franz Marc, strove for spiritual unity and harmony through art.
